123 Days of Summer: Day 27 & 28

May 27 & 28

YESTERDAY: The bun means srs bzns. Unfortunately almost none of that took place yesterday. I planned on writing an article for the free press that was already a day late, and instead I: woke up late, ate breakfast out, went for a walk, watched MIB3, watched 6 episodes of Being Erica, and then waited until about 11 p.m. to even start my article. Needless to say it did not get finished. But when it got started, the bun went up.

TODAY: As you can see in this picture, abstract poetry and tiredness were a big part of my day. I read T.S. Elliot on the subway on the way to work (for class of course), actually worked my ass off at work (finished my long-overdue article plus three work tasks, go me!), and then read Gertrude Stein on the subway ride home. Then I went to class and almost fell asleep several times, despite the fact that the discussion was super interesting and I WAS ACTUALLY A PART OF IT. I REASONABLY FAKED MY WAY THROUGH THAT DISCUSSION LIKE A PRO.

OH, AND I GOT A 74 ON MY MIDTERM. I DON’T MEAN TO TOOT MY OWN HORN, BUT REALLY. I AM AWESOME.

Sadly my day is not over; I told my Uncle Mark I’d do another advertorial for him, and that I would have it to him by the end of tonight. So I guess I’m going to bed late again…

123 Days of Summer: Day 25 & 26

May 25 & 26

YESTERDAY: Texted with Robert for a couple of hours which was nice because I haven’t seen/heard from him in a long time! Met up with Sahar for coffee and, by lucky coincidence, Brian happened to show up at Starbucks as well. We all sat together and chatted and had fun times, and then I went home, packed, and took the train to Aurora to meet Mom and Andrew. Got a tour of Andrew’s workplace, which I’ve never seen before, and then went out for dinner with the two of them. Chilled at home.

This picture is of how Starbucks baristas are failing to spell my name correctly. This is, by far, the weirdest one I’ve encountered (aside from the girl who heard “Cathy” not “Kelsey.”)

TODAY: My granny is turning 75 on the 29th, so we planned a surprise party for her which was today. Somehow we managed to transport her all the way to Waterloo without her suspecting a thing; we even got her to my Uncle Gary’s front door without her being entirely sure of what was going on. Anyway, got a chance to catch up with my aunts, uncles, and cousins, which was lovely. And my granny had a great time. Unfortunately my mom took all the pictures and hasn’t uploaded them yet, so I can’t put one up from the party, but here’s a picture of me. I thought the camera in front of my face was a metaphor for this challenge. BECAUSE I’M DEEP.

123 Days of Summer: Day 24
May 24
Despite this picture, I was actually at work today. It was a slow day, and I basically only did one task which was extremely tedious. Here are the real highlights of my day:
1) I went out to lunch with Abigale and some of the other people from work to celebrate the people who had May birthdays. We sat on the patio. The ladies from work made me put on sunscreen because they are also my mother in disguise, and though I avoided melanoma I did get burned in an unusual way.
2) When I went to Starbucks in Toronto, one of my favourite baristas was working and he only charged me a quarter of what I usually pay. Because he loves me. And I obviously love him.
3) I had time to watch a Being Erica episode between work and…work. (See the picture.)
4) I started reading Bossypants by Tina Fey. (YES, BRIAN, I’VE FINALLY STARTED READING IT.) It’s hilarious. I laughed out loud multiple times while reading in public places today.
5) I finally got a pledge at work, and consequently a bonus. I LOVE BONUSES BECAUSE IT MEANS I GET PAID MORE.
6) Technically my weekend has begun but not really because I have approximately 900 words to write before I go to bed tonight. Of ad copy. For my uncle. This summer is not glamorous, but at least I am working.

123 Days of Summer: Day 23
May 23
Today was much less busy at the office than yesterday, but my luck ended there. I had my midterm today, which I was not adequately prepared for, and I think it kicked my ass. But I do think I at least got like a C-. I was just hoping to do better than that, but it’s my own fault. So I’m over it. On the plus side, I got my response paper back and it was a B- so yay!
And then I went out for a walk with Brian and I was super tired by the end so he bought me an iced capp so that I could wake up and do all the work I have to do still. Maybe I’m just mushy and exhausted, but I almost cried. Sometimes there are moments when you realize you have the best friends ever, and this was one of them.
Anyway, this picture is actually from earlier today when I decided to hop off the subway at Bay station and walk home so that I could walk down Cumberland St, which is one of my favourite streets in Toronto. It’s so pretty and it has this little archway area here. Not the best picture, but I love the area.
Now I’ve got to go work my ass off on overdue shit, so wish me luck!

123 Days of Summer: Day 21 & 22

May 21 & 22

I have to do this quickly because I have to study for my midterm, so here’s the condensed version of the last two days.

Yesterday: fucked myself over by not doing any work. Watched Being Erica, finished Intolerable. Went for a walk outside. Regretted it immensely. But on the eighth day, God created air conditioners and it was good. So everything’s okay.

Today: up and at ‘em for work. All before 9 o’clock I had to pay $4 for transit (fml), got delayed because of a stupid bus, and had a bus try to close its doors on me. ALL BEFORE 9 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING.

Anyway, aside from that, my day was insanely busy. I got into the office and within 20 minutes I’d been assigned a sidebar story for the upcoming issue of the magazine, was given an assignment to put all the prepared pages of the July issue of the mag into a binder for the editor to properly visualize, and then got assigned another sidebar story. Plus I had to do some fact-checking, calling and emailing, and then got assigned a big project for the website’s redesign. The picture is what my desk looked like by 9:30 a.m., in case you were wondering.

It’s only the 22nd day of my summer and I am already sure I took on entirely too much. But that’s a thought for another time.

123 Days of Summer: Day 20

May 20

Today was mostly watching Being Erica, and coordinating with my Uncle Mark about working for his magazine this summer (advertorial writing — experience for me, extra help for him). Not that I’m not grateful that he’s allowing me to do this, but I’m starting to think this wasn’t my smartest decision. I can do it, but it’s going to be a real effort to fit it in.

Plus I realized I have a crap load of stuff to do tomorrow so I’m a little stressed. But I did take care of one of my biggest to dos this weekend, so I’m thrilled.

Anyway, the pictures: I ended up going for a lovely scenic walk along the waterfront with Brian tonight, and got some great photos of the Harbourfront Centre, the CN Tower, and the surrounding area. Pretty! :)

I am so tired I will probably pass out soon.

123 Days of Summer: Days 18 & 19

May 18 & 19

I’m behind. But, then again, so is everyone else. Am I the only one who’s doing this anymore?! D:

Anyway, Friday: finished Love in the Time of Cholera, started on Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes, which I bought that day. Also, it was sleep catch-up day. That’s basically what my Fridays are going to be, I think: sleep and reading.

Yesterday: work from 10:30-2:30, reading Intolerable, and then I discovered Being Erica, a show on CBC that stopped last year, and has now become my entire life. In less than a day I watched the entire first season. It’s AMAZING. The picture, by the way, is a screen-shot of the main actress, Erin Karpluk, who looks astonishingly like my high school dance teacher. It’s eerie.

123 Days of Summer: Day 17
May 17
The benefits of interning at a magazine: FREE SWAG. I ended up with a book, a watch, perfume, and a headband by the end of today. I LOVE FREE THINGS.
Also, got to sit on the birthday “high tea” party of an 85-year-old woman. Drank a little champagne. Got a little dizzy. But all in good fun!
After that work, meeting up with Brian, a nice walk, and now we’re watching Thor in my apartment. I’m really tired and I want to sleep.

123 Days of Summer: Day 15 & 16

May 15 & 16

On Tuesday I started my internship. I got up at 6:30, was on the subway at 8:10, and got to work at 9. And then I started learning the ropes. Right now I’m working on the print side of things under Amanda and Janice, two editors. So basically what that means is I’m writing short little pieces (I already have one byline in the August issue to my name) and doing a crap-load of fact-checking. And, you know, whatever else comes my way. Plus I work, on occasion, with Josephine for the online portion, when she needs me.

Anyway, after work Abigale (friend/other intern) and I took the train back to Toronto, got dinner in the Village, and went to work. When I got home, I crashed.

(If you’re wondering, the picture is from our lunch hour, when we went to Tim’s and enjoyed the sunshine.)

Today was much less learning-the-ropes and more actually-doing-decent-work. I wrote up two articles, got handed three fact-checking packages, and got assigned four stories that are due in June. The picture is what my desk looks like; all the papers, if you’re wondering, are an insane amount of press releases and fact-checking packages.

Lucky for me, when I got back to Toronto I had some time to chill in the apartment before heading out to class which was a pretty interesting discussion about poetry and photography. It’s crazy, but I’m really enjoying my summer school class this year!

On that cheery note, I’m off to bed. Up early tomorrow, but it’s the last day of my work-week…well, until Saturday.

123 Days of Summer: Day 14
May 14
Putting some new shoes on has some downsides. Like breaking them in. And blisters. Lots of blisters.
That wasn’t my whole day, but it was a big part of it. The rest of it was spent taking the train back to Toronto, running some errands, doing my reading for class, and then actually going to class.
Tomorrow is going to kick my ass. And so will the rest of this week. But I’m going to do it.
